Kinja'd!!!

Two questions, Subaru: why do you still only offer it with a five-speed, and why do you insist on doing that stupid two screen thing on the centre console? It doesn’t look the absolute worst, but it’s not great.

Even the base Soul has a 6-speed [scoffs]

I mean, it’s 2016. I think it’s time to add a gear.

True enough.

What do you mean “still only offer it with a five-speed”? Are you talking specifically about the manual? Because it also comes with a CVT.

Specifically about the manual. I’m aware of the CVT.

You don’t understand! Eight-speed doglegs are the future!

But seriously, another gear to keep the revs low at highway speed would be swell.

It’s pretty much the only “compact” without one.

2016: Civic

2014: Corolla

2011: Elantra, Focus, Forte

2010: Golf, Mazda3

2008: Cruze

2007: Sentra

This list only applies in the US/North America, most of these cars offered six-speed several years earlier in other markets. It also doesn’t include models like the Mazdaspeed3, ST/RS, SE-R, GTI, and Si because we’re talking about the Impreza, not the WRX/STI.

Kind of odd to see Nissan and Chevy as the early adopters here, though.

I'd like to see an earlier list with cars like gti, svt, si etc. my focus svt has a 6 speed in 2002. That being said I'd like to see a list of sports car adoption of 6 speed transmissions.

I thoguht the 2 screen thing was a gimmick, but it actually works pretty well actually. at least on the WRX. I had it set to boost/fuel-econ when I had it.

the top screen give you car info, and the bottom screen is for the radio, HVAC, etc etc. works pretty well, other then trying to cram all of the car info into the tiny little screen between the gauges

Are six speeds better in an economy car? My mother’s Mazda 3 has a six speed manual and honestly it can be really frustrating to drive. You shift constantly . I don’t think I need that many gears. Four for town and a fifth for high way cruising. And make sure second has some meaty torque to launch me out of a 30mph turn. Done.

That’s one of the most common complaints I hear about subarus (and one of the only complaints about my Forester as well), but from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t seem to matter whether you have a 6 spd manual or 5 spd. I’m pretty sure that either way when you’re cruising in final gear going 80, you’re still doing about 3k RPMs or more.

Kinja'd!!! CB > Aaaron
09/08/2016 at 16:49

Kinja'd!!!0

Seriously. I wish that final gear for most vehicles would lead to 1500-2000 RPM at 110 km/h, since I’ve heard that’s generally a sweet spot for fuel economy. But nope, no dice.

VW Golf is still a 5-speed for the manual. Only the TDI got 6 cogs, but they can’t sell that right now.

Ford Focus only has a 5-speed as well.

I know only the TDI has a 6-speed, but it’s not a performance model so I let it slide.

The Focus has both. The base 2.0L comes with a 5-speed, but if you upgrade to the 1.0L EcoBoost it has a 6-speed.

I figured we were talking base models but yeah, you're right.

I’m not even sure Ford sells the 1.0 EB here in Canada, but I haven’t looked either. I’d be curious to try one.
